What gematria is
Gematria is letter → number in a stated alphabet, then a sum. For the full definition, pronunciation, and systems overview, use What Is Gematria?. This section only orients the comparison: the object is always a string of letters under a named cipher.
Hebrew gematria uses aleph–tav values. Greek isopsephy uses Milesian numbering. English Ordinal and Full Reduction are later Latin-alphabet maps. None of those sentences replace the guide — they label the sides of the table below so numerology can sit on the other side without blurring inputs.
What numerology covers
Numerology is a wider family of practices that assign symbolic weight to numbers from many sources — not only letters. Birth dates reduced to a “life path,” repeating digits on clocks, master numbers 11 and 22, name reduction to a single digit, and chart systems (Pythagorean, Chaldean) that may or may not match the English Full Reduction tab on this site.
Some numerology books include a letter-sum chapter and call it gematria. Some gematria tutorials mention birthday numbers in the same breath. The two get mixed up easily, so readers ask one question and get answers to another. This article is the split chart.
Comparison table — what each side typically uses:
Gematria (this site’s scope): input = letters in a named alphabet; method = replace each letter with a chart value, add; output = total in that cipher; examples = Hebrew word sum, LOVE in Ordinal, Beta Code Greek string.
Numerology (broader field): input = dates, names, sometimes letter sums; method = reduction rules, master numbers, personal year cycles; output = interpretive profile; examples = life path from birth date, name to single digit, “angel number” readings.
This site does not run birthday numerology or life-path calculators. It sticks to letter values, because mixing letter ciphers with date methods makes totals harder to compare. If you need a date reduction, use a numerology-specific tool and label it as such.
Where they overlap
You can feed a gematria total into a numerology reading as one input among many. That is a second step downstream of arithmetic. A reader might sum a name in Full Reduction, notice 18, and then discuss what 18 means in their tradition — folklore for specific digits is covered in the number meanings article, not re-derived here as numerology doctrine.
Full Reduction English gematria can look like Pythagorean letter reduction because both cycle A–Z through 1–9. They are still not automatically identical — chart boundaries and whether you sum first or reduce first can diverge. Before you compare your Full Reduction tab total to a numerology book, check the maps line by line in the letter value tables.
For a worked name total across English ciphers, see how to calculate a name value. For historical origins of letter-number systems (not numerology’s date customs), see where gematria comes from. The short version: gematria is letters and ciphers; numerology is dates and wider number lore. Keep the two labeled and your totals stay comparable. The Limits and Reading module drills that boundary.
Frequently asked questions
Is gematria a type of numerology?
It can be used inside numerology, but gematria specifically means assigning numbers to letters in a stated alphabet. Numerology also includes dates and other number customs.Does this site do birthday numerology?
No. Date tools are out of scope. The product is letter values. What is life path number vs gematria?
Life path reduces birth dates to one digit in numerology. Gematria sums letters in a word. Different inputs, different rules. Can numerology use gematria totals?
Yes — some readers take a letter sum as one input in a wider reading. This site stops at the sum and chart. Why do search engines mix the two terms?
Both deal with symbolic numbers. Pages that never define either blur the labels. This article is the comparison; the guide defines gematria.
Conclusion
