How this decoder works

Pick a cipher, type a positive whole number, and the tool looks up that total in a pre-built English word index. Matches are other indexed spellings with the same sum — not a claim that the words share a hidden meaning.

Method and caveats are explained in how decoding works. This page is the interactive search.

Worked example: Ordinal 54

In English Ordinal (A=1…Z=26), LOVE totals 12+15+22+5 = 54. The same sum appears for other indexed words such as SUN and VOICE when they are in the list. Enter 54 with the Ordinal tab selected above to list every indexed match for that value.

Shared totals are ordinary arithmetic. For letter tables, see the letter charts. For value → letters (not words), open Number Maps.

Limits of this index

The database is a curated English list that grows over time. It is not Gematrix-scale, not user-submitted spam, and not a Hebrew or Greek lexicon. Empty results are honest: nothing in this index matched.

To compare two phrases side by side across systems, use Two-Word Match. For the Reverse cipher definition and chart, see English Reverse Gematria.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is a gematria decoder?
A decoder (reverse lookup) takes a number and lists words from an index that sum to that number in a stated cipher. It is not a second letter chart and not a meaning oracle. For letters that equal a value (not words), use Number Maps.
  • How is this different from the main gematria calculator?
The homepage calculator totals a word you type (word → number). This decoder searches the other direction (number → words) in a finite English index.
  • Why don’t I see matches for every number?
The index is a growing list of English words and names — thousands, not every phrase ever typed. Empty results mean nothing in this list matched, not that no English string could.
  • Which ciphers does reverse lookup support?
English Ordinal, Full Reduction, Jewish (English A–Z), Reverse, and Sumerian. Hebrew and Greek reverse lists are not included yet.
  • Does a shared total mean two words are related?
It means they add to the same number in that cipher. Any further meaning is interpretation, not arithmetic.
  • Where can I learn how reverse lookup works?
Read the blog guide How Gematria Decoding Works for the method and limits. Use this page to run a search.
