What Mispar Gadol is

Mispar Gadol keeps standard Hechrachi values for non-final letters and raises sofit forms: ך=500, ם=600, ן=700, ף=800, ץ=900. A word that ends with a final letter can total differently than under Hechrachi.

This page is not a second general Hebrew calculator. It focuses on the finals policy. Hechrachi, Siduri, and advanced methods also live on dedicated or suite pages linked below.

The blog post explains how Gadol values finals beside standard Hechrachi.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming every Hebrew total uses Gadol

Many modern tools default to Hechrachi (finals = standard). Always check which finals policy the source used.

  • Typing Latin shalom for Gadol

Gadol counts Hebrew letters. Latin “shalom” belongs on the Jewish (English A–Z) cipher, not Mispar Gadol.

  • Treating Gadol as “more true”

Gadol and Hechrachi are alternate maps. A higher total is not a stronger claim — it is a different chart.

Most wrong Gadol totals come from treating a final form as its regular letter, or the reverse. Avoid these common sofit mistakes when finals change a total.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is Mispar Gadol?
Mispar Gadol keeps standard Mispar Hechrachi values for most letters, but values final forms ך=500, ם=600, ן=700, ף=800, ץ=900 instead of matching the non-final letters.
  • How is this different from the Hebrew calculator page?
The Hebrew Gematria Calculator is the full Hebrew suite (Hechrachi, Gadol, Siduri, Jewish, advanced). This page focuses on Mispar Gadol with a Hechrachi compare tab.
  • Why does שלום change between tabs?
The final mem (ם) is 40 in Hechrachi and 600 in Gadol. Shin, lamed, and vav stay the same — so 376 becomes 936.
  • When should I use Gadol?
When a source or tradition specifies large finals. If a chart shows finals equal to standard letters, use Hechrachi instead and say so.
  • Does Siduri use 500–900 finals?
No. Mispar Siduri numbers letters by position 1–22. Finals share their base letter’s index. Use the Mispar Siduri page for that system.
