What these three methods do

Mispar Katan (on this site): take each letter’s Mispar Hechrachi value, reduce that value to a single digit, then sum the digits.

AtBash: replace each letter with its AtBash partner (א↔ת, ב↔ש, …), then sum the partners’ Hechrachi values.

AlBam: replace each letter with its AlBam partner (first eleven ↔ last eleven), then sum partners’ Hechrachi values.

For substitution walkthroughs, start with AtBash and AlBam basics.

Worked examples

Practice Katan, AtBash, and AlBam in the Advanced Methods module.

Advanced method examples

  • א (AtBash → ת)· 400
    AtBash
    א=400 = 400
  • א (AlBam → ל)· 30
    AlBam
    א=30 = 30
  • שלום (Mispar Katan)· 16
    Katan
    ש=3 + ל=3 + ו=6 + ם=4 = 16
    Hechrachi
    ש=300 + ל=30 + ו=6 + ם=40 = 376

Methods named but not computed here

Traditional lists include many more systems. We name them so you can recognize sources — we do not invent live totals for them on this site. See the full list of supported methods for what this site does compute.

  • Mispar Kidmi

    Cumulative / triangular-style letter counts in some lists — not implemented.

  • Mispar Shemi / Milui

    Spells letter names and sums those spellings — not implemented.

  • Mispar Perati

    Often squares each letter’s value — not implemented.

  • Mispar Bone'eh

    Building / rolling totals along the word — not implemented.

  • Mispar HaMerubah

    Square of the whole total in some traditions — not implemented.

  • Avgad / Reverse Avgad

    Shift ciphers on the aleph–bet — not implemented.

  • AchBi / AtBach

    Additional letter-pairing systems — not implemented.

  • Ofanim / Achas Beta

    Further classical rearrangements — not implemented.

Common mistakes

  • Treating AtBash as a second Hechrachi chart

    AtBash replaces letters first. The breakdown shows partner values, not the original letter’s standard value.

  • Reducing the word total for Mispar Katan

    On this site Katan reduces each letter’s Hechrachi value to one digit, then sums. Digit-reducing the final Hechrachi total is a different (common) custom — labeled separately as digit reduction on other tools.

  • Assuming Milui or Kidmi are live

    Those names appear in the “not computed” list. Do not invent button totals for them here.

Frequently asked questions

  • Which advanced methods can I calculate here?
    Mispar Katan (per-letter digit reduction of Hechrachi values, then sum), AtBash (substitute then sum Hechrachi of partners), and AlBam (first-eleven ↔ last-eleven substitute, then Hechrachi partners).
  • Do you offer all 25 traditional methods?
    No. This page computes three. A catalog below names other traditional methods we do not implement, so you are not shown fake buttons.
  • What does AtBash do to aleph?
    Aleph maps to tav. The total uses tav’s Hechrachi value (400), not aleph’s 1.
  • Where are Mispar Gadol and Siduri?
    Dedicated pages: Mispar Gadol Calculator and Mispar Siduri Calculator. The Hebrew Gematria Calculator page also exposes them.
  • Can I use these on English letters?
    These three tabs count Hebrew letters. For Latin A–Z maps, use the homepage or Reverse / Sumerian pages.
