Objectives

  • Describe AtBash and AlBam as substitution before summing.
  • Describe Mispar Katan as per-letter reduction of Hechrachi values.
  • Avoid treating unnamed traditional methods as live on this site.

Substitute or reduce, then sum

AtBash and AlBam replace each letter with a partner, then sum the partners’ Mispar Hechrachi values. Mispar Katan reduces each letter’s Hechrachi value to a single digit, then sums those digits. All three run live on the advanced gematria methods page.

A single א under AtBash totals 400 because aleph maps to tav. שלום under Mispar Katan totals 16 (3+3+6+4). For the partner map, read AtBash letter substitution.

Only live methods are claimed live

Traditional literature names many further procedures. This site computes Mispar Katan, AtBash, and AlBam on the Advanced Methods page and lists other names as not implemented — no fake buttons. Hechrachi and related tabs stay on the Hebrew calculator.

The Advanced Methods page lists every name we do not compute; this module trains the three live procedures with drills.

Worked examples

  • א· 400
    atbash
    א=400 = 400
    Note
    Aleph maps to tav; the total uses tav’s Hechrachi value (400), not aleph’s 1.
  • שלום· 16
    misparKatan
    ש=3 + ל=3 + ו=6 + ם=4 = 16
    Note
    Each Hechrachi letter value is reduced to one digit, then those digits are summed (3+3+6+4 = 16).
