Objectives

  • Name the five sofit letters and when they appear.
  • Contrast Hechrachi finals with Gadol finals 500–900.
  • Place Siduri as positions 1–22, not large finals.

Sofit finals are the usual error source

Five Hebrew letters have final (sofit) forms: kaf, mem, nun, pe, tsadi. They appear at word end. Mispar Hechrachi counts those finals with the same values as the non-final forms.

Mispar Gadol raises those finals to 500–900. If two sources disagree on שלום (376 vs 936), check whether finals policy matches — not whether the letters were typed wrong. See also the guide to sofit final-letter errors.

Siduri is position, not large finals

Mispar Siduri assigns positions 1–22 across the Hebrew alphabet (with sofit sharing their letter’s place). It is not English Ordinal and not Gadol. The live Mispar Siduri calculator uses that position map.

חי under Siduri is 8+10 = 18 — matching Hechrachi for this pair, which does not mean the maps are identical in general.

Worked examples

  • שלום· 376
    hebrew
    ש=300 + ל=30 + ו=6 + ם=40 = 376
    Note
    Final mem counts as 40 under Hechrachi — the same as non-final mem.
  • שלום· 936
    gadol
    ש=300 + ל=30 + ו=6 + ם=600 = 936
    Note
    Final mem is 600 under Gadol. Shin, lamed, and vav keep Hechrachi values, so the total rises to 936.
  • חי· 18
    hebrewOrdinal
    ח=8 + י=10 = 18
    Note
    Het is 8th and yod is 10th. Siduri sums positions; for this pair the total also equals Hechrachi 18.

Module FAQ

  • Which letters have sofit forms?
    Kaf, mem, nun, pe, and tsadi have final (sofit) forms. Mismatched totals usually come from treating those finals under the wrong policy.
  • How does Mispar Gadol differ from Hechrachi?
    Hechrachi counts sofit letters with the same values as their non-final forms. Gadol raises finals to 500–900. שלום is 376 in Hechrachi and 936 in Gadol.
  • Is Siduri the same as English Ordinal?
    No. Mispar Siduri assigns Hebrew letters positions 1–22. It is not the English A=1…Z=26 map.
