Objectives

  • State that a total depends on a named letter-to-number map.
  • Identify which characters add value and which are ignored on this site.
  • Hand-check a short English Ordinal sum against the live tool.

A total is a map plus a sum

Gematria here means: choose a named letter-to-number map, keep only characters that exist in that map, add their values. The result is a total for that cipher — not a universal property of the word alone. Practice the same sum on the gematria calculator.

Spaces, digits, and most punctuation do not add. If a character has no entry in the active table, it contributes nothing. The live breakdown shows which glyphs were counted.

How to hand-check a short English word

Pick Ordinal (A=1…Z=26). Write each letter’s place value. Add them. Compare to the calculator’s total and letter list, or check values on the gematria letter chart.

LOVE under Ordinal is L=12, O=15, V=22, E=5 → 54. Every example in this course is checked against the calculator, and this one comes back in later modules. Once a single word works, you can calculate a name step by step the same way.

Worked examples

  • LOVE· 54
    ordinal
    L=12 + O=15 + V=22 + E=5 = 54
    Note
Spaces are not present. Each Latin letter adds its Ordinal place; the sum is the gematria total for that cipher.

Module FAQ

  • What characters count toward a total?
On this site, only letters that exist in the active cipher’s map add value. Spaces, digits, and most punctuation are ignored.
  • Why does the same word change when the tab changes?
Each tab is a different letter-to-number map. Ordinal, Full Reduction, Jewish, Reverse, and Hebrew are separate jobs — not alternate spellings of one universal number.
  • Where is the full English letter chart?
Open the Gematria Chart page for printable maps. Use the homepage calculator when practicing English totals with a live breakdown.
